The Shipley Shopper
The Shipley Shopper launch event in Shipley Market on March 1st. 2008 was attended by Bradfords deputy Lord Mayor. A range of tie in events included a balloon modelling clown, face painting, The Peace Artistes, a Microscopic creature enthusiast and Blackpool Donkey rides! 200 Jute shipping bags with an image of the Shipley Shopper were exchanged for plastic carrier bags

The design by Morwenna Catt, an internationally recognised artist and founder of Atom Studios in Bradford, has been drawn from people’s ideas expressed during the public consultations. When talking with people the themes of sheep’ relaxing and shopping came out strongly. People were keen to see both a realistic and comic sheep made out of stone.

It is hoped that this final design represents as many views as possible and brings a light heartedness to the town centre and a smile to people’s faces.

Since its installation the Shipley Shopper has provided a new focus in Market Square and got many people talking.

‘It's great that the people of Shipley are open to something a bit out of the ordinary. I think this design reflects people’s ideas and views in a way that everyone can enjoy and relate to.’ Said the artist Morwenna Catt.

The new artwork is sited in the flowerbed next to the steps opposite Woolworths and installed in the New Year.

This project is funded by Bradford District Safer and Stronger Communities Partnership and is part of the Safer Greener Cleaner initiative in Shipley town centre.
